Friday’s Forget Me Knots: Finger Waves

31 08 2007

Today’s Style: Finger Waves

A finger wave is a method of setting hair into waves (curls) that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s and in the late 1990s in North America and Europe.

The process involves pinching the hair between the fingers and combing the hair in alternating directions to make a wave shape. A lotion was applied to the hair to help it retain its shape.

Newsboy Hats

30 08 2007

The newsboy hat, often referred to as the paperboy hot, is one of Fall’s hot accessories. I know, I know…. this goes against ANYTHING hair-related and I should be preaching the exact opposite! However, there’s nothing worse than a bad hairday, so here’s a nice alternative to bed head.

America’s Next Top Model

29 08 2007

As I sat in my room last night…..there was an intense Fantasy Football Draft going on in my living room. I felt for awhile that these guys were insane for being so obsessed with a sport. Much to my surprise, there was a ANTM re-run on VH1 and I watched it as if it was the first time. I realized that my ANTM obsession is MUCH worse than that of any man to football. I did a little research and discovered that ANTM Cycle 9 starts on Sept. 19th. Wednesday’s will have meaning again!!

Natural Hair Care

28 08 2007

Lately it seems that I have several friends on a quest to rid their hair of perms and transition to a natural style. Curious as to what the Triangle holds, I found a few salons in the Raleigh area and several discussion forums dedicated to the topic. I will continue to add to this post and please let me know what you find.

The Ponytail

27 08 2007

I was thinking over the weekend that the ponytail really doesn’t get enough credit. I’m in the process of growing my hair into a long style and I look forward most of all to being able to pull into a neat ponytail. I think people have this image of the ponytail as being an easy way out or the lazy woman’s style, but in fact it’s a cute, sleek way of cutting 45 minutes out of your morning routine!

Take a look at these celebrity ponytails:

Remembering Aaliyah

26 08 2007

Today marks the 6 year anniversary of Aaliyah’s tragic accident. Aaliyah was known as a star in the R&B world before she was even out of her teens. Her promising career was tragically cut short by her death in a plane crash at age 22. Even with only three albums under her belt, she’d already earned a place as a talented trendsetter among the R&B elite. This site is dedicated to everything hair and today we take time out to celebrate Aaliyah and remember the beautiful trendsetter that she was in the hair world.

Friday’s Forget Me Knots: The Jheri Curl

24 08 2007

Friday’s will be dedicated to the hairstyles of old. Today’s style…….
The Jheri Curl

“(often incorrectly spelled Jerry curl and/or Jeri Curl) is a hairstyle that was common and popular in the African American community in the late 1970s and throughout the 80s. Invented and named for Jheri Redding, the Jheri Curl gave the wearer a glossy, loosely curled look. It was touted as a “wash and wear” style that was easier to care for than the other popular chemical treatment of the day, the relaxer.

A jheri curl was a two-part application that consisted of a softener (often called a “rearranging cream”) to loosen the hair and a solution to set the curls. The rearranging cream used pungent chemicals, causing the naturally tight curls to loosen and hang. The loose hair was then set on perm rods and a chemical solution was then added to the hair to permanently curl it.”
