Friday’s Forgot Me Knots: Da Brat

28 09 2007

I caught myself watching Celebrity Rap Superstar last night. Yes, I watched and I’ll admit it I enjoyed it. However, it dawned on me that Da Brat will always be DA BRAT. I’ll pay someone to tell me her real name without Googling it. There is no changing this look, she has tried through the years and she’s still
Da Brat…….

A Look Back:
Fa All Ya’ll
That’s What I’m Looking For
What Do Ya Like (w/ Tyrese)
Funkdafied

Oh yea… her real name is Shawntae Harris.

Curly Celebrities

28 09 2007

MSN released an article about the newest trend in celebrity hair….curls. Here are a few of the lovely ladies and I included how to achieve this look.

Beyonce

THE LOOK: Thick long curls

HOW TO: Nelson Vercher, of N.Y.C.’s Rita Hazan Salon, says to pin-curl hair at night to get this look. Take a small section, twist it and pin it up. Do that with all of your hair. Then in the morning, run your fingers through it and you’re done.

INSIDER TRICK: Use a small-barrel curling iron to fix any curls in the morning.

Lindsay Lohan

THE LOOK: Voluminous loose curls

HOW TO: Align your part with the middle of one brow when styling. With a 1 ½-inch curling iron, wrap sections of hair around the barrel, stopping three to four inches from the scalp and hold for 15 seconds.

INSIDER TRICK: After finishing with hold spray, don’t touch the curls. “Keep your hands off your hair or you’ll disrupt the shape,” says stylist Eva Scrivo.

Kelly Clarkson

THE LOOK: Shoulder-length curls with sideswept bangs

HOW TO: Apply styling mousse to damp hair, then blow-dry. Use a one-inch curling iron to curl one-inch sections of hair. Secure curl to the head with a bobby pin. Repeat around the entire head. Let curls set and then remove pins. Spritz with hairspray.

INSIDER TRICK: The curls should set in the amount of time it takes to apply your makeup and get dressed.

Halle Berry

THE LOOK: Low curls

HOW-TO: Curl hair from the ears down, wrapping small sections around a vertically held one-inch iron. Lightly shake head to give hair movement after applying hairspray.

INSIDER TRICK: N.Y.C. stylist Kevin Mancuso says that because humidity brings out curls, wavy styles are easier to maintain than pin-straight hair in sticky weather.

Jessica Simpson

THE LOOK: Long spiral curls with volume at the roots

HOW-TO: “Extensions were used to get Jessica’s volume, length and curls,” says stylist Marco Maranghello of N.Y.C.’s John Barrett salon. “However, a similar effect can be achieved without the extra hair.” Blow-dry just-washed hair with a two-inch round brush. When dry, curl small sections of hair using a one-inch curling iron. When the whole head is done, add a bit of shine serum and hairspray for maximum hold.

INSIDER TRICK: “One-and-a-half-inch rollers at the crown and roots of your hair can be the best way to get Jessica’s kind of volume,” says Maranghello.

Sadly: Body of Nailah Franklin Found

27 09 2007

I took a particular interest in this case. It’s sad that this will get no coverage. I’m thankful that this blog and others have decided to coverage. Sadly I report the following:

MSNBC has reported that Nailah Franklin’s family has confirmed that the body found in the Wentworth Woods Forest Preserve was Nailah’s. Their source for this information was apparently a Chicago-area TV station. Reporters there say they received the confirmation from Nailah’s uncle, who has been acting as a spokesperson for the Franklin family.

Another Thinkable One??

How would you feel braiding your honey’s hair?…. This made my day…

Thinkable Thursdays: What’s Going On In This Head

27 09 2007

You can always count on Ty-Ty to give us something to laugh at.

I repeat…if you have this much money, pay someone to keep your wig on straight.
Don’t get me wrong I love Tyra and I’m forever grateful to her for 3 million cycles of ANTM, but she still needs to get it together.

Dominican Hair Salons Unveiled

26 09 2007

There’s no mistaking the look or feel of a Dominican hair salon. Past the often small, hidden doors, you´ll find las peluqueras standing over swivel chairs, wielding blowers like guns aimed directly at the curliest, frizziest hair you´ve ever seen. A bachata might be playing in the background as they unwind soft curls from bright plastic rolos; the chicas under the dryers shouting out the latest chisme while lunch is ordered family-style for everyone in the house. But, as laid-back as these joints may appear, Dominican stylists are known for giving the best damn blow-outs in the country. Or, as Grimilda Gonzalez, stylist of Destination Laguna Spa Salon, says,”Nosotras las dominicanas hablamos un buen blower.” That means they speak a mean blower. And, with a little help from conditioning products sometimes flown in from the island, they work hair through rolos, round brushes, flatirons—whatever it takes—until each strand lies straight and shiny. And the price? Let´s just say it´s common to get a blow-out for as cheap as $20. Popular on the East coast, Dominican salons are now popping up across America.

Find a Dominican Salon
in your area
What´d she say?

Here, a few key words you´ll need to know before stepping foot in a Dominican salon.

el doobie: After hair is blow-dried straight, a stylist may wrap and pin your hair around your head and cover it with this scarf to protect strands and keep them flat. Ask for it by name.

rolos: Wet hair is wrapped around rolos—rollers—and then you´re tucked under a hood dryer for about an hour, until hair is dry, before it´s blown straight. This option uses less direct heat on strands, which damages hair less than if you were to use only a blower to straighten.

el flip (pronounced fleep): When your stylist asks you if you want your blow-out con flip, she´s asking if you want a gentle wave toward the ends, which will give your hair more body and bounce.

halar: Remember what Frenchy said: Beauty is pain. So when your stylist takes a blow-drier into one hand and says,”¡Voy a halar!” get ready: She´s gonna pull your hair through that brush, and she´s gonna pull hard.

More on Girlfriends and Hair Care

26 09 2007

My last Girlfriends post received tons of hits, so obviously ya’ll got the Jones for Joan.. I thought I’d share a great article I found in Essence magazine about the ladies and their haircare regimen.

“One product I can’t live without-I’ve been using since high school-is Neutrogena lip moisturizer.”

Tress management. Going to the beach or a pool is a great opportunity to deep condition my hair. I get in the shower, brush my hair out and then load it with deep conditioner. I like Aveda Deep Penetrating, Lazartigue Shea Butter, Renee Furterer Karite or Hair Mayonaise. Then I just braid my hair up or let it dry on its own. This way, if I swim my hair is coated and protected from the chlorine, salt or sun and gets extra time to get conditioned.

“I’m very casual and I don’t wear makeup unless I’m going somewhere,” says the stunning actress who actually had to look in her makeup bag for us to see what she had. “Blue jeans are my uniform, along with wife beaters, ball caps and cowboy boots.”

Spare and chic. My makeup bag is very simple. I’ve always got Kiehl’s Lip Balm No.1 in the tube with me. I also like MAC’s Lip Glass in Squirt. It’s really something. When you look at it, it’s green, but on your lips, it looks like honey. I also use MAC eyebrow pencils in three colors, Stud, Strut and Spiked. They’re great because you don’t have to sharpen them because they are so thin.

Simply silky. For my hair, I just keep a lot of ponytail holders in my bag. I don’t carry any products with me. On the set, the stylist likes to use Biosilk Silk Therapy Cure on me. It’s a clear serum that’s not oily and makes your hair look like silk. You use about a size of a dime and it works really great before you flat-iron your hair. Necessary glam. I’ll wear makeup if I know photographers will be around. For foundation I use Dermacolor’s foundation in D5 or Chanel’s Multivitamin Natural Makeup in Spice.

Golden Brooks

Golden Brooks

“I am a creature of habit,” says Sarah Lawrence grad Golden Brooks, who portrays the sharp-tongued wife and mom Maya on the show. “I stick with the stuff that works for me.”

Glossy not frosty. I truly never leave home without Chanel’s Glossimer Lip Gloss in Glaze in my bag. It’s like a clear, pale cotton candy pink and it’s perfect for brown skin. It makes your lips look nice and flushed, not frosty, which is very important for brown skin.

Golden glow. Instead of blush or foundation, I just use a little bronzer on my cheeks and eyes like NARS Body Glow and it makes my skin just pop. On days when I haven’t had enough sleep, I use Dermacolor foundation in D5. We all use it. It works on every complexion and it’s amazing. It makes you look like you’ve had a facelift, but you have to moisturize well before you use it.

Spritz & go. “I love using spritzers to cool down after a workout at the gym, so I always use Jurlique’s Lavender Floral Water or Bioelements Monsoon Natural Body Freshener which is wonderful because it smells like lavender.

Smooth shine. For my hair, I love Citre Shine’s Shine Miracle Anti-Frizz Polishing Serum. I use it on my hair when it’s wet because it gives my hair better texture. On my edges, I like Organic Root Stimulator’s Fertilizing Temple Balm (1-888-ROOT-STIM). It’s not greasy, it doesn’t flake and it keeps my edges nice and groomed.

A bit of heaven. On the ESSENCE shoot for the September issue, the beauty editor on the set recommended Warm Spirit Heavenly Body Butter and I just fell in love with it. The smell is not intrusive and it reminds me of Jamaica.

We FINALLY Get Some Love!

25 09 2007

One of my wonderful readers emailed yesterday with the following comment:

“thanks so much for your response to my posting. I went to Schatzi’s and really liked it! I like the blog. Keep up the good work.”

As you can tell, this made me very happy. Last month, I wrote a post about Schatzi’s Design Gallery & Day Spa. She checked it out and guess what… she loved it! I’m VERY excited about. Please remember to mention DiscoveringHair to your stylist or any salons you read about on this blog. For this, I decided to shed more light on Schatzi’s Design Gallery & Day Spa.
